Post #15: What is Slayin’ ?

It is something I’ve been asked a lot and the elevator pitch has always been something I struggled with.  On the surface, Slayin’ is “An action game where you control a little knight who runs back and forth poking at enemies to slay them while also collecting their treasure and trying to avoid getting hit.”  And on the outside, Slayin’ probably did appear to be just that simple.  But the hope was always to add depth to something that might be labelled as “simple”.

The original Slayin’ tried its best to make an arcade style game that felt easy to play, but asked players to “get in the zone” when the difficulty began to ramp up.  Taking hits was inevitable, but learning how to minimize damage and heal through coin collection became the dance that entertained those who “got” what Slayin’ was doing.

Now with Slayin’ 2 that goal is still the same.  Players have more ways to “poke at enemies” but the balance between damage and healing is still there.  Combos now play a more pivotal role in survival as they increase the healing potential of treasure.  The multi-plane setup means that chaining a combo has become more tricky, as finding the closest enemy to chain might not be on the same plane as the player.   Then keeping a combo going through a boss is an additional challenge, but one that might be the only way to maintain enough healing through treasure to survive.

Add unique character stats, unique weapon abilities and charms that grant additional effects to the mix and you can see there are a lot of ways to play Slayin’ 2.  The dance is still there.  The steps are a bit trickier, but also a lot more fun.

Even though the main focus of Slayin’ 2 is the Story Mode, fans of the original should be excited that Arcade Mode has returned.  This time around, Arcade Mode is not endless, but beating it is no easy task.  Killing enemies gets you closer to leveling up, with bosses appearing every 10 levels.  Playing co-op gives you the advantage of being able to resurrect a fallen comrade, at the cost of some of your own health.

After every boss, the mysterious merchant will appear to offer you some much needed aid… for a price.  The merchant’s weapon choice this time around does not change, so learning the best weapon for each new area becomes part of the strategy.

We also added the ability to play with one plane (like the original) or two planes (like Story Mode).  This can make things more intense, but also make it easier to obtain insane combos.  Arcade Mode was designed to resemble something you would find in an old school cabinet, so we hope you enjoy it.

Last April, Pixel Licker got some great news but I wasn’t able to announce it until now.  We are partnering with FDG Entertainment to bring Slayin’ 2 to the Nintendo Switch!  It is the first time we have been able to publish one of our games on a console and it is fulfilling a childhood dream 30+ years in the making.

3 years has gone by so fast but I hope fans of Slayin’ will be excited to play the new game.  The new 2P mode really fits the Switch, especially when you get a couch co-op session going.  Bug testing is pretty far along, so the hope is to have it ready for Nintendo submission in the coming months.

I am also going to be posting some of the other features of the game in the coming weeks to fuel the hype train.  Let’s spread the word to make Slayin’ 2’s launch a successful one!

Oh, and for people who have been following the PC version’s development, it has taken a bit of a back seat to the Switch port.  But it is definitely in the works for the future. 😉

Every area of Slayin 2 has a boss, but the sheer number of areas meant that coming up with lots of interesting bosses was going to be a challenge.  Early on, Mega Man style bosses were used as inspiration for the basic boss AI.  The bosses needed to become more nimble and reactive to the player as the game got harder.  And the dual plane system meant that the bosses had to deal with players who jumped planes often.

This has lead to a lot of boss revision as the game has developed.  Bosses evolved to have “multi plane” attacks as well as some attacks that force the player to switch planes in order to avoid damage.  In rare cases, the second plane is removed entirely, forcing the player to deal with the boss more directly.

Another new system in Slayin 2 revolves around status effects.  Some enemies can stun, poison or slow the player.  The desert is filled with creatures that throw poison attacks, slowly draining your health.  Some player weapons reduce the damage, while some items actually nullify it all together.

The desert boss also likes to throw out poison and stun attacks.  But in true arcade fashion, wiggling the controller quickly can get you to wake up faster.

It is a little late, but we are happy to report BostonFIG was a great success.  Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by and tried out Slayin 2.  One of our main goals was to get as much feedback as possible and validate a lot of the new ideas in the game.  I think it is safe to say that EVERYONE likes multiplayer.  Most of the attendees wanted to play with a buddy or the random person standing nearby.  There was also a lot of interest in a Switch port, so we might look into crowdfunding as we get closer to a final build.

We would also like to thank all the Slayin fans who stopped by and talked or snapped photos with us.  It is humbling to learn that people enjoy our work so much. ^_^  Also thank you so much to the @BostonFIG staff who so graciously hosted the event.  It was our first showcase and we had a great time.

A lot of fans of Slayin wished they could take down the monster hordes with a friend.  In Slayin 2, you can do just that!  As you gather new characters into your party, you can bring a friend into any area to lend a helping hand.  There may also be additional competitive modes in case you want to compete for treasure or score.

The Knight’s Trusty Sword is great for hacking up enemies in the air and on the ground.

Some weapons, like the Holy Mace, hit hard, but leave you vulnerable if you miss.  If brute force is more your style, nothing tears through bosses like the Holy Mace.  Just make sure you hit your target.

Weapon choice in Slayin2 is a much bigger deal.  Each weapon has a unique set of Actions associated with it.  In most cases, the Actions are attacks that can do multiple hits to enemies or assist with player mobility.  Actions always spawn additional treasure from enemies, so it is best to use them to get in as many hits as possible.  Some Actions can be performed in rapid succession, letting you repeatedly punish the peskier foes.
